Battling Depression

Mental Health is a very crucial topic. In today’s generation, we should be aware of what exactly is meant by a positive mental health. Have you developed a healthy way to cope with stress? Are you making time to participate in activities you love? Such awareness can help you and others detect any possible mental health disorders that you didn’t even know were present in your life. As educators, it is especially important to be informed on several mental disorders so you can recognize any signs and symptoms that your own students may be suffering with a mental disorder themself. You will be able to develop several strategies such as effective communication skills, helping the students find professional help, and just being there for your students in moments where they might be battling through a mental disorder. I decided to focus on the topic of depression but there are several other disorders that we should familiarize ourselves with as well. It can be difficult for a person to even realize that they are experiencing depression. It can be even more difficult for anyone to reach out when they persistently feel emotionally drained and have mood swings. I provided a link to a google slide that can help educators better understand depression and how to recognize any warning signs that a student may be experiencing depression. Looking at the slide provided, you can learn about treatments such as medication and different types of therapy used for depression. You will also learn that a few warning signs to look out for are, if a student loses interest in hobbies, has mood swings, and often self-loathes. There are also links to a few articles and a video that can further increase your knowledge on depression.

  1. Hello Sthenia,

First of all I just want to say that your Power point slide is absolutely stunning and shows how much effort you put into the visuals. Secondly, I feel that the information present is very thorough and conveys well with what your trying to inform the reader about Major Depressive Disorder.

A Question I feel we could all try to answer is how we could recommend solutions to a student (i.e. Therapy or Counseling) who is battling Depression to make them feel that we want to push them towards the right direction. There are many ways I feel we could hint a student to getting the push they need to create ways to cope to their unique minds.

Overall I like the references inserted in the slides and the extra resources for those who want to learn more

    Thank you for your slide!
